Background:
Ebony's world is in three parts: Heaven up above, Hell down below, and Earth in between. Heaven is the realm of light and houses the Angels and Saints. Earth is the realm of Humans; it is a neutral realm and one both angels and demons may tread. Hell is the realm of darkness and houses Demons and all manner of dark creatures.
Heaven is a quiet and very rigid place. The sun never sets on Heaven. The Silver City is nestled in the clouds. The Angels and Saints seem to be very self contained, rarely interacting with humans or going down to Earth. Yes, some Angels are Guardians, protectors of humans, but typically they do so from the safety of the Silver City.
Earth is similar to our Earth, its history and majority of its inhabitants the same. There are, however, some demons and even fewer angels as well as other mythical creatures dwelling amongst humans. Most of these creatures do what they can to blend in.
Hell, on the other hand, is more like barely organized chaos. There are eight major sections of Hell. The Capitol City, with Lucifer's castle and the major underworld market place, and the Seven Deadly Sins, ruled by Dukes and Duchesses. Within each of the Sins, there are multiple "Realms" which house each individual demon's idea of home, a little world of their own devising.
Hell is old, older than the Earth, but not quite as old as Heaven. Hell was formed after the uprising in Heaven, led by Lucifer, where half the host rebelled against God. These rebels were cast out of Heaven and denied His Grace. They grouped together and formed Hell. Lucifer became the ruler of Hell, of course, and he selected his seven most trusted generals to become the Dukes and Duchesses of their respective realms, later becoming the realms of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Demons respect power. And with that, Lucifer created a power class system that all demons were forced into. The weakest of these classes is Third Class and the strongest being Perfect Class. With each increase in power, demons became more evil, more prone to violence and cruelty, and more under Lucifer's thumb. A demon is not stuck in each individual class for life, but can grow, attaining higher levels as they grow too strong for the lower classes. What Lucifer didn't count on was the eventual discovery of Free Class, which broke the formerly Perfect Class demons free of the cruelty and subservience to Lucifer and instead rewarded them with free will and a human-like conscience.

Ariadne found the boy to be rather a disappointment and a bit of an embarrassment. What kind of prince helps the servants? What kind of demon was he to be so small and kind?
When he was a thirty year-old Second Class demon (after pulling a crazy stunt of riding a nearby farmer's pig naked), Ebony ran away from home to escape Ariadne's wrath. And he went, naturally, to the only other place he knew: his father's house in San Francisco. He'd been there once before, when he was quite a bit younger, so he remembered the way. Sebastian allowed the boy to stay as he was clearly terrified. Here is where he met and fell in love with Chris, a human and friend of his father.
Eb's story with Chris was not to end with just a boyish crush, they decided to move out on their own and found an apartment in Tokyo. Domestic bliss was starting to settle in when they were found by one of the servants of Oblivian Castle, a small black pig named Shadow Stalker. Shadow was sent to find Ebony and report back to Duchess Ariadne, but Eb and Chris captured the servant and kept him as a pet.
They soon discovered that it wasn't just this lone servant searching for the missing prince, but also demon bounty hunters. They were found out in the apartment, it's defenses weak at best, and after a fight, fled. It was here, defending his loved one, that Eb made the leap to First Class.
Needing a place to live, the two purchased a large house in St. Francis Wood in San Francisco and started setting up strong defenses. To those approaching the house, there would be a growing unease and desire to get away. Most passersby thought the house was haunted and were too frightened to try to approach. Ebony also worked diligently to create an immunity to holy water, which burns demons and might kill them if enough is applied. He finally perfected the formula after months of work and then set about soaking the floors in holy water. He needs to drink his formula every twenty-four hours to keep the effects of the holy water at bay. Within the quiet period of time that followed, Ebony and Chris were married in the demonic manner, exchanging rings.
The two lived at peace in the big house, going out only in disguises, until they were discovered by Chris's brother, Lex. Lex and Chris were more rivals than they were brothers, but Ebony took a shine to Lex. Lex saw this as an advantage over Chris and did what he could to seduce, successfully, the young demon. Chris never trusted Lex, knowing he must have a trick up his sleeve, and did what he could to keep the two separated. Little did he know how right he was.
Lex did indeed have a trick up his sleeve. He was leading Eb on, even going so far as to allow Ebony to contract him in order to gain his trust. His true plan was to turn the lost demon prince over to the bounty hunters. At the last second, he had a change of heart and instead protected Ebony from the hunters and was killed for his efforts. Ebony had never lost someone he loved and went mad with rage. The two bounty hunters had no idea that tiny little sweet Prince Ebony could hold so much power. He killed them gruesomely, ripping them apart.
Desperate to find Lex's reincarnation, Eb went searching for where the heart of his soul went. His search led him to University High, a private school, and to Cody who was closely followed by his friend Zachary. Ebony introduced himself to the boy and explained his crazy sounding story, hoping to appeal to whatever portion in him that had been Lex. It took a week for Cody to start coming around and enjoy spending time with the young demon, though Zach took to Eb almost right away.
Despite everything, the rage and guilt of Lex's death grew too much for Ebony and he jumped to Perfect Class. The leap caused Ebony to lash out at those nearest to him, actively pursuing activities to hurt them physically and emotionally. Chris, Cody, and Zach banded together and formulated a plan to draw out the true Ebony, the Free Ebony, from within the chaos of the demon's Perfect mind.
Over the years together, Ebony had taught Chris much about his own element, earth, and magical ability. He also began to teach Cody, water, and Zach, fire. None of them were exactly prepared for diving into a Perfect Class demon's mind. But they did what they had to do. They managed to knock the demon out by hitting him on the head and Chris, being the more proficient in magic than the other two, formed a mental bridge, grounding Cody and Zach as they entered the demon's mind. They were forced to explore the dangerous mindscape in search of the cell the true Ebony was locked in. Once they found him, it was a matter of convincing him to escape the cell and confront the Perfect Eb that was in control. The boys escaped Eb's mind with Chris's help as the Free and Perfect Ebonys fought with no way of know who was the victor until Ebony woke up. When he finally awoke, it was the right one and the Free Class Ebony was born just in time to make them dinner (though really, they ordered in after that ordeal).
Personality:
Ebony bounces to the beat of his own drummer as far as demonkind is certain. His mother still doesn't understand where she went wrong in raising him. He is everything stereotypical demons are not. He is kind, sweet, and gentle. He's more likely to bake you a cupcake than he is to intentionally hurt someone. Typical demons, on the other hand, are more likely to eviscerate you in front of your family and desecrate your remains. Ebony genuinely cares about the well being of others and his effervescent presence has been known to brighten any location.
Ebony in not really best suited as a leader or a follower, but he would make a great mascot (and he'd bring cookies!). He respects authority when he feels an authority figure has done something to earn respect, but those who have not earned their authority or abuse their power he does not heed. He also tends to pick and choose what kind of orders from authority he will follow. He weighs whether or not he feels they are the right thing to do before he chooses to act or not act on them.
He is a very honest young demon and has a tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve and can be read like an open book. He is bouncy a effervescent when he is happy, quiet and pouty when he is hurt, crying when he is upset, and his reactions to situations can be read as very childish and immature sometimes, but he's consciously working on that aspect of himself. When he has a crush on someone, which is often, he blushes and stammers. Of course once that crush develops just past that initial crush stage, he is much more outgoing and assertive about going after his man and winning his heart, usually through cookies and shoulder massages.
Having been raised as the Prince of Gluttony, Ebony is used to getting his way. However, he is not afraid to roll up his shirt sleeves and work to get what he wants. Ebony is tenacious. Once he has a goal in sight, he doesn't let go no matter how may times he may trip and stumble on his way to it. If things don't go well the first or tenth or hundredth time, he plucks himself up and tries again. He does, of course, get worn down. His resolve will waver if he repeatedly fails at attaining his goal, especially if that goal involves other people, but more often than not he will buck up and return to working at getting what he wants.
Ebony is a very social demon and is happiest when he's surrounded by loved ones and able to keep them happy and well fed with his delicious home cooking. His home with his husband, Chris, is very large and could house quite a few more than just the two of them (a feat he will eventually accomplish later when Cody and Zach move in as Ebony's second and third husbands). He tries his hardest to get along with everyone he meets. Of course this doesn't always work out as he doesn't particularly care for people who are intentionally cruel.
It is rare to see Ebony angry. Threats to his home, his loved ones, and way of life will get him worked up, as will a perceived injustice happening around him. His mind is very justice oriented and he believes that all creatures should be allowed second chances. This is how he ended up in the situation with Lex where he himself was almost captured by bounty hunters. He was desperate to give Lex a second chance despite the negative things Chris had to say against his brother.
Ebony does not handle loss well. When things fall through entirely despite his best laid plans, he will manage pick up the scraps before falling to pieces. Lex's death was a prime example of that. Immediately after Lex's death, Eb found and utterly destroyed the bounty hunters who had claimed his life then he set out to find his reincarnation. It wasn't until after he found Cody that Ebony lost the last shred of his tenuous hold on himself and ascended to Perfect Class.
When Ebony is Perfect Class, his personality switches around to rather the opposite of what anyone is used to. He is vicious and sadistic, preferring to emotionally torture those he normally holds dear. His goals are mostly hellbent on keeping himself entertained by causing all sorts of violent mayhem. And there are no cupcakes to enjoy that aren't made with poison or drugs (assuming he'd even bother to bake). It's opposite day in the Oblivian house and everyone's invited (though you should probably just stay home)!
Abilities:
Third Class: The weakest level of powers. Easily fatigued when using infernal powers. Extremely limited emotional dampening of demons of this class. Powers available at this level: Glamor, Contract, Marriage, Limited Telekinesis, Extremely Limited Primary Elemental Control.

Contracts: All demons are capable of contracting other beings, willing or unwilling and it is considered to be a common tool. A contract, or a "mark", is formed by a demon carving it into the flesh of the contractee. Once the contract is fully carved, the wounds heal and form a pitch black tattoo mark in the shape of the carving. This can only be removed by the will of the contractor or the contractor's death. A contract essentially binds a contractee to the contractor. It is a claim of property and a level of protection against unwanted sexual activity. In some cases it also binds the soul of the contractee so that the contractor can easily locate the contractee's reincarnation.
Marriage: A demon wedding is a simple affair, usually done in private. There is an exchange of rings and then they are bonded permanently. Rings used for this ritual are unable to be removed. Many demonic marriages are formed out of long term partnerships, more an act of logic and necessity than passion and love. Demon couples bonded by marriage are often keenly aware of the location of the other, making them easy to locate if there is trouble. If a demon marries a human, the human's lifespan is extended (and youth kept intact) to match the demon's. However, if the demon dies, any human spouses that have outlived their natural lifespan will die as well. Demons are able to marry more than one partner if they so desire.

What... What is wrong with the milk in this town? Please tell me I can still use it for cooking. It's an essential ingredient for so many recipes. How can I bake without milk? Can I buy a cow? Would my own cow have safe milk or is it just the milk from the dairy?
[He pauses as he realizes he's no longer on the edge of tears, but is instead actually crying. He covers his eyes with his arm, trying to calm himself down.
Of course this isn't about the milk, even he knows that much. Everything he has been through since his arrival, the loss of his small but growing family and his home, suddenly becoming completely human, these things have been weighing him down.]

His search led him to University High, a private school, and to Cody who was closely followed by his friend Zachary. Ebony introduced himself to the boy and explained his crazy sounding story, hoping to appeal to whatever portion in him that had been Lex. It took a week for Cody to start coming around and enjoy spending time with the young demon, though Zach took to Eb almost right away.
Despite everything, the rage and guilt of Lex's death grew too much for Ebony and he jumped to Perfect Class. The leap caused Ebony to lash out at those nearest to him, actively pursuing activities to hurt them physically and emotionally. Chris, Cody, and Zach banded together and formulated a plan to draw out the true Ebony, the Free Ebony, from within the chaos of the demon's Perfect mind.
Over the years together, Ebony had taught Chris much about his own element, earth, and magical ability. He also began to teach Cody, water, and Zach, fire. None of them were exactly prepared for diving into a Perfect Class demon's mind. But they did what they had to do. They managed to knock the demon out by hitting him on the head and Chris, being the more proficient in magic than the other two, formed a mental bridge, grounding Cody and Zach as they entered the demon's mind. They were forced to explore the dangerous mindscape in search of the cell the true Ebony was locked in. Once they found him, it was a matter of convincing him to escape the cell and confront the Perfect Eb that was in control. The boys escaped Eb's mind with Chris's help as the Free and Perfect Ebonys fought with no way of know who was the victor until Ebony woke up. When he finally awoke, it was the right one and the Free Class Ebony was born just in time to make them dinner (though really, they ordered in after that ordeal).
Personality:
Ebony bounces to the beat of his own drummer as far as demonkind is certain. His mother still doesn't understand where she went wrong in raising him. He is everything stereotypical demons are not. He is kind, sweet, and gentle. He's more likely to bake you a cupcake than he is to intentionally hurt someone. Typical demons, on the other hand, are more likely to eviscerate you in front of your family and desecrate your remains. Ebony genuinely cares about the well being of others and his effervescent presence has been known to brighten any location.
Ebony in not really best suited as a leader or a follower, but he would make a great mascot (and he'd bring cookies!). He respects authority when he feels an authority figure has done something to earn respect, but those who have not earned their authority or abuse their power he does not heed. He also tends to pick and choose what kind of orders from authority he will follow. He weighs whether or not he feels they are the right thing to do before he chooses to act or not act on them.
He is a very honest young demon and has a tendency to wear his heart on his sleeve and can be read like an open book. He is bouncy a effervescent when he is happy, quiet and pouty when he is hurt, crying when he is upset, and his reactions to situations can be read as very childish and immature sometimes, but he's consciously working on that aspect of himself. When he has a crush on someone, which is often, he blushes and stammers. Of course once that crush develops just past that initial crush stage, he is much more outgoing and assertive about going after his man and winning his heart, usually through cookies and shoulder massages.
Having been raised as the Prince of Gluttony, Ebony is used to getting his way. However, he is not afraid to roll up his shirt sleeves and work to get what he wants. Ebony is tenacious. Once he has a goal in sight, he doesn't let go no matter how may times he may trip and stumble on his way to it. If things don't go well the first or tenth or hundredth time, he plucks himself up and tries again. He does, of course, get worn down. His resolve will waver if he repeatedly fails at attaining his goal, especially if that goal involves other people, but more often than not he will buck up and return to working at getting what he wants.
Ebony is a very social demon and is happiest when he's surrounded by loved ones and able to keep them happy and well fed with his delicious home cooking. His home with his husband, Chris, is very large and could house quite a few more than just the two of them (a feat he will eventually accomplish later when Cody and Zach move in as Ebony's second and third husbands). He tries his hardest to get along with everyone he meets. Of course this doesn't always work out as he doesn't particularly care for people who are intentionally cruel.
It is rare to see Ebony angry. Threats to his home, his loved ones, and way of life will get him worked up, as will a perceived injustice happening around him. His mind is very justice oriented and he believes that all creatures should be allowed second chances. This is how he ended up in the situation with Lex where he himself was almost captured by bounty hunters. He was desperate to give Lex a second chance despite the negative things Chris had to say against his brother.
Ebony does not handle loss well. When things fall through entirely despite his best laid plans, he will manage pick up the scraps before falling to pieces. Lex's death was a prime example of that. Immediately after Lex's death, Eb found and utterly destroyed the bounty hunters who had claimed his life then he set out to find his reincarnation. It wasn't until after he found Cody that Ebony lost the last shred of his tenuous hold on himself and ascended to Perfect Class.
When Ebony is Perfect Class, his personality switches around to rather the opposite of what anyone is used to. He is vicious and sadistic, preferring to emotionally torture those he normally holds dear. His goals are mostly hellbent on keeping himself entertained by causing all sorts of violent mayhem. And there are no cupcakes to enjoy that aren't made with poison or drugs (assuming he'd even bother to bake). It's opposite day in the Oblivian house and everyone's invited (though you should probably just stay home)!
Abilities:
Third Class: The weakest level of powers. Easily fatigued when using infernal powers. Extremely limited emotional dampening of demons of this class. Powers available at this level: Glamor, Contract, Marriage, Limited Telekinesis, Extremely Limited Primary Elemental Control.
Second Class: Stronger than Third Class, but still relatively weak. Not so easily fatigued when using infernal powers. Moderate emotional dampening of demons of this class. New powers available at this level: Teleportation, Limited Telepathy, Moderate Telekinesis, Moderate Primary Elemental Control.
First Class: This is a strong class, classically only bested by Perfect Class demons. Fatigued after moderate use of infernal powers. Strong emotional dampening of demons of this class. New powers available at this level: Moderate Telepathy, Strong Telekinesis, Strong Primary Elemental Control, Limited Secondary Elemental Control.
Perfect Class: This is the strongest of the traditional class system. Called Perfect Class because they are "Satan's Perfect Little Soldiers". Driven to focus entirely on their missions and tasks. Fatigued only after heavy use of infernal powers. Extreme emotional dampening of demons of this class, these demons only know hatred, rage, and sadism. These are the cruelest of all demons, entirely lacking empathy. New powers available at this level: Strong telepathy, Mind Control, Strong Secondary Elemental Control.
Free Class: Free Class demons are as strong as Perfect Class demons. Fatigued only after heavy use of infernal powers. No emotional dampening of demons of this level. No new powers available at this level. Free Class demons have both Free Will and a human level conscience.
Elemental Powers for Ebony: Ebony's primary element is Electricity and his secondary element is Water. Electrical powers include control over electrical power, lightning, and static electricity. Water powers include minor control over water and healing of physical wounds including broken bones. He can heal most non-lethal wounds, but tires easier as it is power coming from his secondary element.
Contracts: All demons are capable of contracting other beings, willing or unwilling and it is considered to be a common tool. A contract, or a "mark", is formed by a demon carving it into the flesh of the contractee. Once the contract is fully carved, the wounds heal and form a pitch black tattoo mark in the shape of the carving. This can only be removed by the will of the contractor or the contractor's death. A contract essentially binds a contractee to the contractor. It is a claim of property and a level of protection against unwanted sexual activity. In some cases it also binds the soul of the contractee so that the contractor can easily locate the contractee's reincarnation.
Marriage: A demon wedding is a simple affair, usually done in private. There is an exchange of rings and then they are bonded permanently. Rings used for this ritual are unable to be removed. Many demonic marriages are formed out of long term partnerships, more an act of logic and necessity than passion and love. Demon couples bonded by marriage are often keenly aware of the location of the other, making them easy to locate if there is trouble. If a demon marries a human, the human's lifespan is extended (and youth kept intact) to match the demon's. However, if the demon dies, any human spouses that have outlived their natural lifespan will die as well. Demons are able to marry more than one partner if they so desire.

[It hadn't taken long for ebony to discover that the non-native Mayfieldians avoid the milk. And this revelation has led Eb to the phone, his voice panicked and sounding almost at the edge of tears.]
What... What is wrong with the milk in this town? Please tell me I can still use it for cooking. It's an essential ingredient for so many recipes. How can I bake without milk? Can I buy a cow? Would my own cow have safe milk or is it just the milk from the dairy?
[He pauses as he realizes he's no longer on the edge of tears, but is instead actually crying. He covers his eyes with his arm, trying to calm himself down.
Of course this isn't about the milk, even he knows that much. Everything he has been through since his arrival, the loss of his small but growing family and his home, suddenly becoming completely human, these things have been weighing him down.]
I'm... I'm sorry... I didn't mean to blubber at all of you like this. And... I'm sure many of you want to get home as much as I do. I miss Chris and Le---Cody and Zach and even Shadow even though he always bites me and my house and being able to have milk to bake.
[He hiccups into the phone and then sniffles.]
